The threats to wildlife are like a broken record, aren't they? Habitat destruction, invasive species, climate change. (Sometimes we can add overhunting to the mix, but in the U.S. that was more of a nineteenth century thing.) A broken record yet we must keep on playing it to remind ourselves that protecting natural systems remains largely within our control. Supporting the Endangered Species Act is a choice that we must keep on making.

Yes. One thing that surprised me, looking through press coverage of the ESA over the years, is how often the law has come under attack and nonetheless it remains a very strong law.

There are problems with getting species listed. There is a lot of foot dragging at Fish and Wildlife. It seems that the Center for Biological Diversity always has about two dozen lawsuits with the service at any time seeking listing or enforcement of listing.

In 2024 I'll be writing of my experience with species that are quite rare and endangered ye have no federal protection.
